Local Business – a creative bunch
For those of us who make a living on the web, it’s easy to forget the influence local business has on driving the entrepreneurial sprit.
No matter what type of business you are in, networking with the business leaders in your local community is always a great source of inspiration and great ideas.
I’ve been so consumed with Internet Marketing lately – it’s been a while since I’ve attended one of the most popular Nanaimo Chamber of Commerce events – the Business After Business local networking series.
But last night, I was fortunate enough to attend this event, hosted by local business marketing company – Impact Visual Communications.
Way to go Impact!
In speaking with the owner, Mike Thompson, and Business Development Specialists Annabel and Mike it was interesting to discover that Impact Visual used to be known mainly for their business printing capabilities but now they have grown so far beyond that – becoming business partners with their clients rather than just service providers.
Entrepreneurs are thriving in Nanaimo!
It was also fantastic to network with entrepreneurs who are involved with such great projects on the local scene. For example:
- Walter Anderson – CEO of ITC Computers who is prepping his local IT services company to go “stratospheric”
- Dan Perpeluk of Webacom who is involved with a cool new project for business promotion – Namedropper.TV
- Dora from the Artful Dodgers who is expanding her business promoting local artists
- Edward Zwart of Softserv who uses his background in teaching to to deliver “no geek speak” software
- Barbara McDougall of the Nanaimo Chamber of Commerce – doing a creative promotion of Chamber events on their
Barb & Bill YouTube channel
Kudos to the Nanaimo Chamber of Commerce and to Impact Visual Communications for hosting such a useful and entertaining evening!

I think local business is a great place to start for entrepreneurs in the beginning. For example, it is easier to get a website to the top of search results locally, like targeting New York web designer vs. just web designer. Plus, if you are locally networking, word of mouth can get you a good bit of business.

Hey Kristi!
Can you recommend a goof comment management plugin for Wordpress?
I just discovered your comment here – so sorry!
In my city – Nanaimo, British Columbia, Canada, there is SUCH an opportunity for marketing llocal business on the web – because nobody’s doing it effectively.
But because nobody’s doing it effectively, most businesses “just don’t get it”.
Local Web marketing is both a challenge and an opportunity – that’s for sure!
I think the key is to generate nore business for companies without asking them to pay upfront – instead you take a cut of the increase in business…
Thanks again for your comment! It wasn;t eveb Christmastime when you wrote it so now I’ll wish you Happy New Year instead!
Cheers!

I don’t have any comment management plugins, persay. I just have emails that are filtered into specific folders of my Gmail that let me know when I have new approved comments and new ones to moderate. That’s really the only way I keep up with mine!
