These days, if you want to get your message heard, you gotta have an angle.
If you’re Britney Spears or Joaquin Phoenix, that means going commando in public or faking you’re crazy…
And if you’re me, well you try and get a very cool blogging job by dissing your prospective employer.
Are you Crazy? Yes, I Am
Ok, so the job in question is a ‘Blogging Phenom’ for the Sprout Social Insights Blog.
And the crazy part? Well, it’s that I recently asked Sprout Social to cancel my account because I couldn’t figure out the advantage of using it. And now I’m asking them for a job…
Knock! Knock!
And here’s why: As an experienced blogger, well versed in the worlds of both social media and old school marketing, I’ve come to the following conclusion:
The blog must complement the brand.
Yet, in the case the Sprout Social Insights Blog, I don’t feel the blog is currently complementing the Sprout Social Platform itself.
Now, I’m not suggesting that the blog become a self promotional mouth piece for the company’s products. But if consumers of the blog articles (like me) are not motivated enough to find out about how the actual company’s PRODUCT ties in to the articles, then that’s a golden opportunity lost…
So how would I change it?
• Well, I would continue to write informative and entertaining articles about using social media for business.
• And I’d mix it up from time to time with articles that might not have an immediate association with the products but that are still consistent with the overall brand.
• I’d write a series of articles, written in easy to understand, non jargon English, that explain HOW TO USE THE PRODUCT to acheive the business goals alluded to in the rest of the blog.
And finally, I’d not only ‘broadcast’ my point of view, but I’d actively solicit the knowledge and experience of others in the wider social media community, like I allude to here in the prelude to my upcoming speaking engagement at Social Media Camp:
When all Else Fails…
Well…maybe that’s not such a crazy approach after all.
But, if all else fails, I can always dive bomb the CEO in the hallways next week – we’re both speaking at Social Media Camp Victoria!
UPDATE!
Interestingly, the company knew about this blog post before I even sent them the link – using their own brand monitoring platform. That’s what it’s all about…
I re-instated my free trial of the application to give it another college try. I’ll let you all know how that turned out as well!
Viva Le Social Media!

Your honesty while promoting this product is refreshing. You just used the right amount of “dissing” to be professional and interesting enough … without crossing the line.
